The day after Steph's homecoming Emilie, Porter and Matthew drove to Montana for Emilie's family reunion. They stayed in a beautiful cabin on Bull Lake with Emilie's parents and all of her siblings. It was amazing to have everyone together. The family swam, canoed and hiked during the day. But Emilie particularly enjoyed the evenings after the children went to bed and the grownups played games and talked. Of course, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows came out on Saturday July 21, so the week also involved some marathon reading. Emilie, Mary, Matthew and Brian read the book overnight so that it wouldn't interfere with daytime activities. Mark, Brittany, Heather and Dad are more disciplined and are savoring it. Needless to say, any talk about the secrets of the book were taboo. Unfortunately, Emilie told Porter what happened in the book, forgetting that seven-year olds are not the best secret keepers. Oops!
Harry Potter was on everyone's mind including the minds of the children. On a hike in Cedar Grove, each kid picked up a stick and pretended it was a wand. Elise's "smelliarmis" curse was great. When Porter started performing the Unforgivable Curses we had to make a few rules. First and foremost, no unforgivable curses on people. Porter seemed to understand the concept quite well, and spent the rest of the afternoon doing the Crucio curse on the sky, the ground and the trees.
